Cooltek : Green and Sustainable Home

Let’s talk about Efficient Energy Use or also known as Energy Efficiency. Energy Efficiency is use to reduce as much energy for the appliance with the same use. Let me put it this way, if you replace the computer or printer with a more energy-efficient model, you will use less energy and save more money to pay the bills.

Now, have you heard about the green and sustainable home that was built in Malacca? The house was builds by late Harry Boswell and Stephanie Boswell base on their environment friendly philosophy and they called their home Cooltek. Late Harry Boswell already died 2 years ago but Stephanie still pursuing their will in conducting the environment friendly house.

This Cooltek is located in 350 Jalan Woodland, Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club, Ayer Keroh, 75450 Melaka, Malaysia. The specific place in the Tiara Melaka Golf & Country Club that full with trees also helps their house to achieve their mission.

Did you know that 20 houses like Cooltek will only consume the same amount of energy that one standard Malaysian house do? Don't believe me..? Let me tell you a few details about the house.

The Cooltek home is build to practice the used of the air conditioner for the whole day..meaning that for almost 24 hours. Cooltek is air-conditioned all day in order to reduce the heat, humidity and to keep the coolness in the house. The house also surrounded by the trees that help to prevent the heat from warming up the building. The roof of the house is protected by the white steel roof, lined with high quality aluminium reflective foil that will reflects much of the sun’s heat during day and reducing the radiation of the heat down into the roof space. The wide roof overhangs shade the single storey walls and importantly the recessed windows. The complete steel roof structure allows most heat accumulated during the day to dissipate quickly after the sun sinks below the horizon.

The windows are build facing the north and south to avoid from the direct sun from entering the house through the windows. They’re also use ventilation from beneath the ground so it will brings cooler and filtered fresh air into the house. Insulated walls of 250mm thick CSR aerated autoclave blocks it to resist as much of the heat and sound from the outside traveling through the rooms and keeping as much of the air-conditioned coolness from being lost.

This couple also manage to get an award for their home, the ASEAN Energy Awards in 2009. The event is held annually and strives to promote awareness of the need for Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation throughout the ten ASEAN countries. Cooltek was entered under the ASEAN Renewable Energy Project Management Competition which was held on 27-28 May 2009 in Vientiane.

Cooltek also one of the house that implement the Feed-In Tariff (FiT). Cooltek get their quota from SEDA Malaysia in early February 2012. In conclusion, Cooltek is one of big example of an energy efficient house because the energy was 75 percent generated from the sun and don't you think that FiT is actually a very good start to us to find new solution for our future..? For some reason, we can't just depending on our non renewable sources...We have to think further...in order to maintain the energy that we have now.

Don't you think our SUN is so powerful..? hehehe...
